Slim & Compact Cameras

Canon announced the SD970 IS and nine other compact digitals this past February, and if our review model is any indicator of the quality and performance of the others, Canon's got a batch of winners on their hands. The SD970 IS would seem to appeal to folks primarily interested in capturing images without too much effort on their part, as the lack of manual exposure controls leaves user inputs rather limited, but shutter and AF performance are good and image quality and color fidelity are first rate. It's not too big a stretch to believe that good performance and image quality may trump the desire for manual controls (or a RAW shooting option) in the minds of many more "hands-on" types looking for a camera in this class. There's not much to dislike with the SD970 IS. The 37mm wide angle isn't all that wide, so users will have to get further away from large subjects to get them all in the frame. On the other hand, the 5x zoom translates that 37mm into 185mm at the telephoto end, which helps get you a bit closer to distant subjects than most others in the class. And, as Canon is quick to point out in their ad copy, that 12.1 megapixel sensor offers "amazing resolution and editing" possibilities that effectively make that 185mm shoot even longer than it is. OK, some folks may cover the flash with their finger(s) until they get a feel for the camera, and full discharge flashes can seem like they take forever to recharge as the timer ticks closer to 10 seconds. The microphone in video mode doesn't handle wind very well and you'll swear that 5 to 7 knot breeze is really more like Category 5, but think of the dubbing possibilities that open up. Bottom line: this is an excellent camera overall and one that would be on my short list were I in the market for something of this class. Pros: Very good still image and color quality, Very good HD (720p) video quality, Good shutter lag and AF acquisition times, Good battery life. Cons: Flash easy to cover with finger(s) while shooting, Full discharge flash recycle times approach 10 seconds

Panasonic’s Lumix TZ7 (or ZS3 as it’s known in North America) is the successor to the enormously popular Lumix TZ5, and like that model, packs a super-zoom range into a compact form factor. This time the TZ7 / ZS3 zooms a little wider and a little longer with an impressive 12x range, and despite the small dimensions, the quality is very respectable. Like the TZ5 before it, you can record HD movies in 720p, but now have the choice of Motion JPEG or AVCHD encoding along with stereo sound. The already capable automatic mode has been enhanced and there’s also an HDMI port. Easily one of the best compacts around. Pros: 12x stabilised zoom with 25mm; HD video; great auto mode. Cons: Little manual control. HD mode no match for a camcorder. Overall: One of the best compacts just got better.

The Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR is heavily based on the previous F100fd model, offering the same body, versatile 28-140mm 5x zoom lens and a very similar control layout. Thankfully Fujifilm have reinstated a key feature that made the F-series cameras so appealing to serious photographers, namely the A / M creative shooting modes that give you more control over what the camera is doing. This is a very welcome step, although the lack of a shutter-priority mode and only offering two possible aperture settings does leave a slightly bitter taste in the mouth. The long-standing absence of a histogram in either shooting or playback mode and any bracketing options also grates, and many would-be-buyers will be instantly put off by the lack of a RAW mode. The potential combination of EXR and RAW is certainly mouth-watering, and one that we would love to see in a future Fujifilm camera.

For now, though, the Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR produces fantastic out-of-the-camera JPEG images with low noise and amazing dynamic range. Sure, the pay-off is physically smaller images in some instances, but if you want to literally see the finer details in all areas of your photos, that's a price well worth paying in our book.

Canon’s Digital IXUS 100 IS / PowerShot SD780 IS is a very stylish compact, with its slim build and rounded corners attracting admiring glances wherever we took it. Despite its tiny dimensions, Canon’s included 720p HD video, HDMI output, scene detection, and even a tiny optical viewfinder, and while the 2.5in screen may sound small, it looks great and there’s literally no room for anything bigger. On the downside, the 3x zoom is lacking true wide angle and you can’t adjust it while filming video, but there’s no denying the overall physical appeal of the camera - if you’re after a slim, stylish compact which handles itself well in general-use, it’s a great choice. Pros: Slim, stylish, HD video, HDMI output, viewfinder. Cons: Basic 3x lens with no wide angle or zooming when filming. Overall: Basic zoom, but still one of the best super-slim compacts.

The Canon IXUS 95 IS / PowerShot SD1200 IS is a small, light and stylish compact that will appeal to anyone who places a premium on looks and ease of use, but can’t stretch to models like the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS below. The IXUS 95 IS / SD1200 IS a capable little compact that produces great quality with the minimum of fuss. Sure, the zoom could be a little longer and HD video would be nice too, but those aren't features you'd expect in this price bracket. For our money, Canon has got it right where it matters - style, portability, ease of use and great picture quality. The IXUS 95 IS / SD1200 IS is one of the best budget compacts right now. Pros: Compact; good quality; viewfinder; low price. Cons:Basic 3x lens with no wide angle or zooming when filming. Overall: Stylish compact with good quality at a great price.

There's no doubt about it, this camera takes fun seriously. It's ready for a pool party and it wants to steal the limelight when it arrives. However, some of the problems I ran into while shooting with the FinePix Z33WP should be taken into account. The camera struggles in difficult lighting conditions, and finding the right balance in shooting settings is sometimes tricky. Shooting in Auto and Scene Recognition mode will take some of these decisions out of the hands of the user, but it's a far from perfect overall shooting experience. Don't count it out, though. It took some good quality images in and out of the water, it withstood our underwater testing, and it was generally a fun camera to use. For under $200, it's not a bad option at all, assuming you want all the attention that goes along with a flashy pink camera. And if you do, then flaunt it, baby, flaunt it. Pros: Small form factorn, Nice overall image quality, Dust and water sealed Cons: Noise at ISO 400 and above, Some chromatic aberration, Some lens flaws

The Samsung ST45 is a compact digital camera only 16mm slim and available in three colors: red, black, blue, and gray. Released in September of 2009, the ST45 is a simple-to-use ‘point and shoot’ camera with a 2.7” QVGA (230K) LCD display, a 12.2MP resolution, and a 3x optical zoom. It includes Samsung’s proprietary Smart Scene Recognition technology, which includes 11 pre-optimized settings for specific conditions like nighttime, portrait, macro, etc. Signature to the unit is its Digital Image Stabilization, that along with the wide-expanse of ISO settings (80-3200) reduces blur and ensures sharp images in both dark and light settings. Note also the Self Portrait/Frame Guide—an innovative new technology that allows a user to take a ghost picture, which another user then utilizes as a basis/template for taking the original user’s desired shot. It’s like Guy A pre-setting the shot for Guy B.

10 Words You Need to Stop Misspelling

Posted via email from ReadersINFO

iFrame

iFrame is a constraint of the H.264 codec specified by Apple to ensure ease of consumer video editing.
It provides a square-pixel 16:9 image format of 960 horizontal by 540 vertical pixels, with progressive scanning at 30 frames per second and can be identified as the format "540p30". These parameters are one-half the spatial resolution of 1080p in each direction, one-quarter the total number of pixels. iFrame has 1.5 times the number of pixels in standard definition 4:3 720×480 CCIR 601 NTSC video. However, its progressive scanning increases the approximate perceived resolution advantage over 480i to roughly a factor of 2.
The 30 fps frame rate used for iFrame may result in increased "judder" with moving images, when compared to the nominal frame rate of 60 fields per second (30 fps interlaced with even and odd lines) used in North America for professional video.
The audio is AAC-encoded.
The video sub-sampling, bit-depth, and the video, audio and aggregate bit-rates are not yet publicly known.
At introduction in October of 2009, two camera models from Sanyo supported the format.

The most interesting about the iMovie update that dropped yesterday is that "improves compatibility" with camcorders using the iFrame video format. The iFrame video format, you say? Why yes, it's a new video format from Apple.

iFrame's based on industry-standard codecs H.264 and AAC, but it's got a standard res of 960x540 and it's designed by Apple "to speed up importing and editing by keeping the content in its native recorded format while editing."

Currently, the only two camcorders using iFrame are the Sanyo VPC-HD2000A and VPC-FH1A. The question is what other cameras are gonna be using it and how much of a real standard iFrame's going to be. We all know how much Apple loves setting standards.

SANYO has released its two new high-end digital camcorders – SANYO VPC-HD2000A (vertical form factor) and VPC-FH1A (horizontal), which the company claims as the world’s first camcorders that support new iFrame video format – the next generation computer-friendly video format (designed by Apple) which allows users to dramatically speed up the process of importing, editing and sharing movies by keeping the content in its native recorded format while editing, aiming to enhance your video editing and sharing experience.

Features Of SANYO VPC-HD2000A And SANYO VPC-FH1A:
3-inch wide LCD Monitor (SANYO FH1A); 2.7-inch wide screen display (SANYO HD2000A)
10x optical zoom for photos and 16x advanced zoom (includes more area than standard zooming) for video
Digital Image Stabilizer for video and stills shot
iFrame video format H.264 960 x 540 pixels (30 frames per second)
Record full 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) HD video at 60 fps
Capture 8 megapixel digital Photos and high-speed sequential shooting at 12fps
High Speed Recording/Super Slow Motion Playback (240/600fps for 1/4 or 1/10 playback)
Face Chaser technology detects up to 12 faces for optimizing focus / aperture settings
Three-Dimensional Noise Reduction (3D-DNR) technology offers a significant improvement in video clarity by reducing random signal noise
Super fast start-up and recording in as little as 1.7 seconds
Built-in SD/SDHC memory card slot
“SANYO is proud to be the first manufacturer to offer camcorders that are compatible with the iFrame video format. This format offers a major breakthrough in reducing the time it takes for consumers to import, edit and share high quality video,” said Tom Van Voy, General Manager for Consumer Products Group at SANYO North America. “In addition to this new video format, our Dual Cameras also offer the ability to shoot 8-Megapixel photos as well as a number of video modes, including Full HD 1080P/60fps, making them the perfect choice for sharing high quality movies with family and friends, for video bloggers or budding videographers.”

The new compact SANYO VPC-HD2000A and VPC-FH1A camcorders that offered in black color are now available for around $600 and $500, respectively.

cajole: Dictionary.com Word of the Day

cajole \kuh-JOHL\, transitive verb:

To persuade with flattery, repeated appeals, or soothing words; to coax.

If Robert had been an ordinary ten-year-old he would have cajoled and whined, asked and asked and asked until I snapped at him to keep quiet.
-- Anna Quindlen, Black and Blue
One of Virgil's great accomplishments was his ability to charm, cajole, weasel people out of their bad moods, especially when their bads moods inconvenienced him.
-- Anthony Tommasini, Virgil Thomson: Composer on the Aisle
Whiz kept to himself and spent long hours every day studying financials and technical charts and reading impenetrable economic publications. Even the warden had tried to cajole him into sharing market tips.
-- Belfry Holdings, The Brethren

Cajole derives from Early Modern French cajoler, originally, "to chatter like a bird in a cage, to sing; hence, to amuse with idle talk, to flatter," from Old French gaiole, jaiole, "a cage," from Medieval Latin caveola, "a small cage," from Latin cavea, "an enclosure, a den for animals, a bird cage," from cavus, "hollow." It is related to cave, cage and jail (British gaol).

Looking over the log book kept by the computer support staff at my office, I noticed several entries stating the problem was PICNIC. I asked one of the technicians what PICNIC meant. He laughed as he told me it meant "Problem In Chair, Not In Computer"

A doctor got a phone call from one of his colleagues. “We need a fourth for poker,” the voice on the phone said. “I’ll be right over,” replied the doctor. As he was putting on his overcoat, his wife asked, “Is it serious?” “Oh yes, quite serious,” he said gravely. “They’ve had to call in three other doctors as well.”

bad credit mortgage article

Bad Credit Mortgage Questions By Janice Blakely
If you need bad credit mortgage and you already have financial difficulties, you must first find out and understand all of the facts so that you may get the best deal for you. If you are not careful and commit yourself recklessly to a mortgage, you might get yourself stumped because some lenders could charge very high penalties and interest rates. Here are some of the frequently asked questions about bad creditmortgage.
FAQ 1: What is bad credit mortgage?
Bad credit mortgage is a product intended to assist individuals with bad credit history and other credit problems pay off your debts, refinance or buy property. The market forbad credit mortgage has expanded over recent years, similar to the growing number of individuals with bad credit history.
Because many are now being refused a standard mortgage due to bad credit, the major mortgage lenders in cooperation with modern expert companies have conceived products that are aimed at this market. This means that individuals trying to find a mortgage of this type have a lot of choices.
FAQ 2: What is the difference between bad credit mortgage and standard mortgage?
These two are basically almost the same. A lender will lend you a settled amount of capital, which you have to pay back on the arranged date with the settled interest rate added. You can choose from products where the rate of interest is predetermined, or where it can fluctuate in proportion to inflation. The main difference of these two is on the rate on interest and certain constraints.
For bad credit mortgage, the interest rates are higher then the normal rates to some extent and there could be restrictions on the amount of money you have to pay back and how often you will pay. If you choose bad credit mortgage, you have to be certain that all required terms would be met because your credit rating would be improved if you are able to show that you can pay regularly as agreed wit the lender.
FAQ 3: How would I know if I need bad credit mortgage?
Check your credit history. If you have ever been declared bankrupt, had applied for a mortgage in the past but were declined, have massive credit card debts or had a Count Court Judgment (CCJ) against you, you should consider bad credit mortgage.
FAQ 4: How would I know which bad credit mortgage is right for me?
Seek professional advice. A bad credit mortgage agent will have thorough knowledge of all the products available on market and will be able to tell you which products are best for you depending on your circumstances. Not only do they have the proficiency to determine the right products, they can also help you with your application by completing certain forms and sort out any problems you may come across with.

anxiety article

What Is Anxiety By laqu7864a
Anxiety is a psychological and physiological reaction to stress. It is a natural mechanism that prods one into action to cope with a difficult situation. Anxiety about exams makes students study. Anxiety about a loved one’s health may make us more caring. However, when anxiety becomes excessive or lasts for prolonged periods, it is called anxiety disorder.

Anxiety is usually accompanied by symptoms such as stomach ache, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, head ache, chest pain, and heart palpitations. Outward signs may be trembling, sweating, turning pale, and dilating of pupils. Physiologically, these symptoms indicate that the body is readying itself to face some threat or gearing to prevent one’s indulgence in harmful behavior. But since immune and digestive systems cease to function normally, anxiety disorder can be a health disaster. Prolonged anxiety can also lead to insomnia.

Anxiety disorder is usually accompanied with several emotional symptoms as well. Fear is the most significant among these. There is fear of dying, fear that symptoms like chest pain and headaches are symptoms of grave illness. Dread, apprehension and panic attacks in the extreme cases are common manifestations of fear. These panic attacks are accompanied with a very real perception of danger.

Inability to concentrate may lead to feeling completely blank. Irritability, tenseness, restlessness, nightmares, déjà vu, and feeling scared of random things are other emotional symptoms.

Types of anxiety disorders:
* Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Unreasonable, persistent anxiety for no identifiable reason.
* Phobias: This is extreme fear of an object, situation, or activity.
* Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): It manifests itself in behavior and habits that seem impossible to control.
* Separation Anxiety: Usually occurs in childhood.
* Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder: Sudden overwhelming bouts of irrational fear characterized by an acute sense of danger.

Most physicians agree that anxiety disorder is a symptom of a stressful lifestyle. It is not a disease, and therefore, has no cure. One isn’t born with or doesn’t contract this illness. Rather, it is produced by our lifestyle–the way we live. It is a natural protective mechanism, and therefore, can never be eliminated. Anxiety becomes a disorder when a person gets physically and emotionally distraught because of it.

There is medication in the market that can control anxiety symptoms. However, such medication is harmful in the longer run and must not be considered as cure. Anxiety can be controlled and overcome naturally. The following are some steps to take to reduceanxiety naturally:

* Increase Vitamin B and calcium intake. Inadequate intake of Vitamin B and calcium can worsen anxiety symptoms.
* Do plenty of exercise. Exercise relieves emotional stress and strengthens immune and digestive systems.
* Get some counseling. Talking to an expert will help identify the root cause of the disorder.
* Relaxation is a must. Remember: Anxiety is a reaction to stress. Relaxation techniques include regular muscle relaxation, meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, and isometric relaxation exercise.
* Cognitive therapy, that is, self realization and reasoning with the self, may prove most beneficial.

noun:
1. Tinsel; imitation gold leaf.

The room had a twelve-foot high ceiling: hanging from it, four dimly lit antique brass chandeliers cast a clinquant glow on this sunless day.
-- Sally Koslow, The Late, Lamented Molly Marx: A Novel
The water, turned clinquant by the sunset, lay rather than stood.
-- William Least Heat-Moon, River-Horse: The Logbook of a Boat Across America

Planetary Systems Now Forming in Orion

Planetary Systems Now Forming in Orion
Credit: NASAESA, M. Robberto (STScI/ESA), the HST Orion Treasury Project Team, & L. Ricci (ESO)

Explanation: How do planets form? To help find out, the Hubble Space Telescope was tasked to take a detailed look at one of the more interesting of all astronomical nebulae, the Great Nebula in Orion. The Orion nebula, visible with the unaided eye near the belt in the constellation of Orion, is an immense nearby starbirth region and probably the most famous of all astronomical nebulas. Insets to the above mosaic show numerous proplyds, many of which are stellar nurseries likely harboring planetary systems in formation. Some proplyds glow as close disks surrounding bright stars light up, while other proplyds contain disks further from their host star, contain cooler dust, and hence appear as dark silhouettes against brighter gas. Studying this dust, in particular, is giving insight for how planets are forming. Many proplyd images also show arcs that are shock waves - fronts where fast moving material encounters slow moving gas. The Orion Nebula lies about 1,500 light years distant and is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as our Sun.

anti spam article

Anti Spam Software By Kistina Robin

Spamming is a problem, which most people encounter when it comes to the use of computers. This is the unwelcome receipt of e-mails and the automatic pop up of unwanted windows. As such, actions that combat these technological hazards arise. This is where the technical term, antispamming comes in.

Anti spam defines various actions, which are done to combat these kinds of cyber hazards. They may manifest as antispam software or antispyware. One common version of this antispam stuff would be the Microsoft antispyware. However, no all encompassing anti spam law has been passed yet. Although some countries have already acted on such issues, anti spamming is still a problem experienced by the cyber world. This is because no worldwide cyber law has been passed yet.

Common antispam software, or even the Microsoft anti spam, functions in a very generic way. First off, it allows the user to set the definitions for spam. Once the perimeters have been set, the antispyware will now commence in its antispam reviews. Once the antispam review is over and done with, you can now start cleaning up your system. Thus, your cyber systems will be free from the net clogging caused by spamming. Without the spamming, you will be able to enjoy the net without the interruptions. It will help you maximize your electronic mail space, web pages, personal URL and others. Furthermore, you won’t be at risk of accidentally deleting your personal mails together with the spam. It’s good isn’t it?

Sadly, this peace of mind is not meant to last. Just like viruses and other pop up mechanisms, spamming also elevates to harsher levels as time passes by. More advanced spamming techniques are created every day. As such, the new ones become undetectable to the earlier versions of Microsoft antispyware, anti spam software, and other anti spam review materials. You may find this as sick but it is the truth. Unless you don’t want to use the net, you will have to bear with these anti spamming measures at all time. Don’t worry about these though. If you just choose the right program, then you won’t have to worry about paying so much for your updates. Since it’s net based, it won’t even take as much time.

To combat the advanced spamming techniques, any user will have to connect to the Internet. This will give the necessary updates, which will elevate the status of your antispyware to the next level. Doing so will empower your computer systems against the latest spamming versions. Most of these antispamming software techniques are free of charge so you don’t have to worry about a thing. As long as you are within the terms and conditions of your service provider, then everything will be A- OK!

With all these protective measures against spamming, your cyber experiences will be as enjoyable as ever. You must try this now and experience surfing without the spamming. We guarantee that it’s an experience worth fighting for? What are you waiting for? Start anti spamming now!

dolorous

dolorous \DOH-luh-ruhs\, adjective:

Marked by, causing, or expressing grief or sorrow.

Climbing out on to a narrow ledge, we waving cheerily at the people passing by on the street below, until my mother was informed of our misdemeanour -- by a waitress wickedly known to great-aunt Mary, behind her table napkin, as Sourpuss for her perpetually dolorous expression -- and we were lured back inside.
-- Mary Varnham, "Voices of young and old are rarely heard", The Evening Post (Wellington, New Zealand), March 30, 1995
And at the centre of this intense display of devotion Carlo himself, bearing aloft the relic of the Holy Nail from the cathedral, shoeless and oblivious to his bleeding feet, walked amid a dolorous procession of penitents.
-- Helen Langdon, Caravaggio: A Life
Dolorous derives from Latin dolor, "pain, grief, sorrow," from dolere, "to suffer pain, to grieve."

Tutulemma: Solar Eclipse Analemma

2009 December 20

Tutulemma: Solar Eclipse Analemma
Explanation: If you went outside at exactly the same time every day and took a picture that included the Sun, how would the Sun appear to move? With great planning and effort, such a series of images can be taken. The figure-8 path the Sun follows over the course of a year is called an analemma. This coming Tuesday, the Winter Solstice day in Earth's northern hemisphere, the Sun will be at the bottom of the analemma. Analemmas created from different latitudes would appear at least slightly different, as well as analemmas created at a different time each day. With even greater planning and effort, the series can include a total eclipse of the Sun as one of the images. Pictured is such a total solar eclipse analemma or Tutulemma - a term coined by the photographers based on the Turkish word for eclipse. The composite image sequence was recorded from Turkey starting in 2005. The base image for the sequence is from the total phase of a solar eclipse as viewed from Side, Turkey on 2006 March 29. Venus was also visible during totality, toward the lower right.

-- Charles Krauthammer, "The Last Deal or No Deal", Time, July 17, 2000
