Toshiba BookPlace DB50 Color e-book Reader runs Android collection

Toshiba introduced in Japan its new BookPlace DB50 (model DB50/25E/PDB5025ENAW) color e-book reader, joining the company’s Excite X10Thrive and AT200 tablets. The 7-inch e-reader offers direct access to Toshiba’s BookPlace e-book store for thousands of books. The DB50 comes with a 7-inch 600×1024 color LCD display with LED-backlight

Toshiba’s BookPlace reader is powered by a 1GHz Freescale i.MX535 processor with 1GB of RAM, and comes with 8GB internal memory for storing your e-book collection. The device supports Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi 802.11b/g/n connectivity and has microSD/SDHC card slot for expansion and a micro USB 2.0 for PC connection and charging. There is a built-in mono speaker as well and its battery provides up to 7.5 hours of use.

The Toshiba BookPlace DB50 color e-reader runs on modified version of Android 2.3.5 and a special version of Linux. The reader will be available on 10 February.

ZTE Light Tab 2 Android Tablet

ZTE releases the Light Tab 2 (model V9A) tablet in the UK. The new tablet runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS on a Qualcomm SnapDragon MSM8255 1.4GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. It supports quad-band GSM/EDGE and dual-band HSPA 3G mobile networks, in addition to WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1. GPS is also included for navigation on a large screen.

The Light Tab 2 comes with a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, 3.2 Megapixel rear facing camera, 0.3 Megapixel front-facing camera for video chat. It has 4GB internal memory for installing apps and storing music, video and documents, and there is a microSD/SDHC card slot for expansion. Other features include micro USB port, G-sensor, proximity sensor, light sensor and a 3400mAh battery.

To be shipped in late February, the ZTE Light Tab 2 is available for order for GBP195.83.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer

Other than the 7-inch Eee Pad MeMO, Asus also brings the Eee Pad Transfomer (EP101) and the Eee Pad Slider (EP102) to the CES 2011. Both of them feature a 10.1-inch 1280×800 IPS touchscreen and are powered by NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. They will be loaded with Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet-oriented OS.


The Eee Pad Transformer will come with a docking option That incorporates a full QWERTY keyboard and serves as a battery extension station for up-to 16 hours of non-stop computing; while the Slider is equipped with a sliding keyboard. Both of them will have a 5 Megapixel camera with LED flash and a 1.2 Megapixel front camera.


Asus is expected to release the Eee Pad Transformer in April with price ranging from $400 to $700, and the Slider in May for $500-$800.

ViewSonic unveiled at the CES 2012 its ViewPad e70 tablet running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Powered by a single-core 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM, the slim e70 has 4GB onboard storage. It comes with a 7-inch 800×480 capacitive touchscreen and provides microHDMI output.

The 7-inch ICS tablet has a front-facing camera and support WiFi connectivity. It has microSD/SDHC card slot. The ViewPad e70 will be available in late Q1 for $169.99.

Toshiba announced at the CES 2012 its Excite X10 for the US market (also known as AT200 in some markets and Regza AT700 in Japan), which is the world’s thinnest 10-inch tablet measuring just 7.7mm thick and weighs just 535g. The device has as premium, ultra slim, lightweight design and is equipped with magnesium alloy surface for durability and style. It is powered by a TI OMAP 4430 dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of LPDDR2 RAM.

The Excite X10 features a 10.1-inch 1280×800 HD IPS LED-backlit touchscreen with 10-finger multi-touch support, which is protected by scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass and an anti-smudge coating for greater resiliency. The tablet has a 5 Megapixel main camera with LED flash, a 2 Megapixel front-facing camera, built-in stereo speaker with Toshiba and SRS Labs sound enhancement, as well as micro HDMI port for bringing HD content to a bigger screen HDTV.
